flat flexible speakers

A groundbreaking new loudspeaker, less than 0.25mm thick, has been developed by University of Warwick engineers, it’s flat, flexible, could be hung on a wall like a picture, and its particular method of sound generation could make public announcements in places like passenger terminals clearer, crisper, and easier to hear. Lightweight and inexpensive to manufacture, the speakers are slim and flexible: they could be concealed inside ceiling tiles or car interiors, or printed with a design and hung on the wall like a picture

Digital artist Alessamdro Prodan amazed us all with the following cgi masterpiece.
And before you even think: yes, all vegetation: branches, trees, leaves and grass are also geometry.
Mr. Prodan mentioned that his research was intensive, starting from a vast photo reference archive to the botanical, light and composition studies, he decided to push his own limits.
Using Maya&MentalRay, this scene holds around 990.000.000 tris! Amazingly, due to the tremendous optimizations Alessandro went through, all was done using a normal QuadCore with 4gigs of Ram and each image took only 2/3hours to render!

Susana Soares is a researcher and designer currently teaching in London South Bank University and collaborating with the Material Beliefs project sponsored by the EPSRC. Maybe some of you will remember her works from ‘Design and the Elastic Mind’… Well if you don’t be sure to check them out. What follows are a series of questions she was kind enough to answer for us.

1 Please tell us about your educational background. What made you pursuit design as your profession?
When preparing my application for college my first options were architecture and sculpture, product design was not on the horizon at the time. All I knew was that in someway my field of studies would have to be connected to tri-dimensional exploration of texture, form, perception and body related interactions. Then somebody told me about ESAD in Caldas da Rainha which presented itself as an alternative with a new teaching philosophy so I decided to try it out and I can’t say that I regret it.

Por favor fala-nos um bocado sobre o teu percurso educacional. O que te levou a escolher o design como profissão?

Quando estava a preparar a minha candidatura à universidade as primeiras opções foram inicialmente arquitectura e escultura, design de produto não estava ainda no horizonte, mas tinha a certeza que a área de estudos teria de estar relacionada com a tridimensionalidade e a exploração de texturas, formas, percepções e interacções relacionadas com o corpo.
Alguém me falou da ESAD das Caldas da Rainha que se apresentava como uma alternativa e uma nova filosofia de ensino, resolvi tentar, não me arrependo.

2 If at the time you were finishing university you would be given the opportunity to pick a point in time and a studio for an internship what would they be?
The present time, despite all the apparent difficulties, poses valid and interesting opportunities. I really the appreciate the work of people like Anthony Dunne, Fiona Raby or Natalie Jeremijenko.
Design in the 30’s especially in the United States brought about decisive influences, a good example was the ‘Machine Art’ exhibition in 1934 and I can’t help but mention the work of the Eames couple. In the 50’s and 60’s a lot of the technology developed during the war was transferred / translated into daily life and so there were a lot of progresses made both in production methods and materials (polymers), a few examples of that are the Djinn chair by Olivier Mourgue in Kubrick’s ‘2001 – Space Odyssey’ or the Globe chair by Eero Aarnio.

Se à saída da faculdade pudesses escolher uma qualquer época e um qualquer atelier para realizar um estágio, qual escolherias?
A presente época, apesar das aparentes dificuldades, apresenta oportunidades muito válidas e interessantes.
Aprecio muito o trabalho de Anthony Dunne, Fiona Raby e Natalie Jeremijenko. O design dos anos 30 principalmente nos EUA trouxe influências bastante decisivas e exemplo disso é a exposição de “Machine Art” em 1934, não posso deixar de mencionar o trabalho do casal Eames. Nos anos 50/60 muita da tecnologia desenvolvida durante a guerra foi transferida / traduzida para a vida quotidiana por isso houve grandes desenvolvimentos tanto em processos de produção como em materiais (polímeros), só para mencionar alguns exemplos – Djinn chair de Olivier Mourgue em “2001 – odisseia no espaço” ou a Globe chair de Eero Aarnio.

3 How would you describe the times we are living in product culture and the degree of accountability of designers in the manifestations and evolution of that same culture?
I truly believe we are at a transition stage shifting from a ‘material culture’ towards a form of
‘ethically responsible culture’, and since product design connects to consumption obviously the transformations in society will be influenced by the design process and vice-versa.
The meaning of ‘consumption’ and ‘consumer’ is changing, the responsibility, function, work and role of the designer are also going through changes, which I believe to be positive.

Como é que sintetizas o tempo que vivemos na cultura material hoje e o grau de responsabilidade do profissional do design nas manifestações e evolução dessa mesma cultura?
Acho muito sinceramente que estamos numa fase de transição da “cultura material” para uma “cultura eticamente responsável”, e estando o design de produto relacionado com o consumo obviamente que as transformações na sociedade são influenciadas pelo processo de design / designer e vice versa. Sendo que consumidor e consumo são conceitos que estão a mudar, a responsabilidade, função, trabalho e papel do designer também está a sofrer transformações, que podem ser muito positivas.

4 What are you working on at the momment?
At the moment I’m finishing an investigation project by the name of Material Beliefs at the Goldsmiths University of London. The goal is to promote and explore relations between design and other disciplines in the fields of science and engineering and trying to get public involvement in the process. My field of interest is related to the future implications of the use of stem cells in different forms of therapy and associated with the project is the Stem Cells Advanced Centre – UCL in London, UK.

Neste momento, em que projectos é que estás a trabalhar?
Neste momento estou a acabar um projecto de investigação que tem o nome de Material Beliefs e está sediada na Goldsmiths University of London. Este projecto tem como objectivo explorar colaborações entre design e outras disciplinas nomeadamente na área ciência e engenharia, promovendo o envolvimento do público no processo.
A minha área de interesse está relacionada com as implicações futuras da utilização de células estaminais como terapia e como parceiros de projecto estão Stem Cells Advanced Centre – UCL, Londres, UK.

5 Your project ‘Bee’s’ was presented in 2007 at ‘Design and the Elastic Mind’, an exhibition curated by Paola Antonelli at MOMA. It was then selected to integrate the museum’s permanent collection. Can you talk a little about that?
I began the ‘Bee’s’ project in 2007 during my MA in Design Interactions at the Royal College of Arts in London. The general purpose of the MA was to explore new perspectives towards design, exploring relations between design and scientific and technological research seemed to fit perfectly. Also it had to have a link to the third dimension, to product design. All the objects and systems ended up translating those areas of research with the aim to explore future implications they might have on our daily life and at the same time bringing the discussion closer to the public. It was in this context that ‘Bee’s’ was generated, a project based on research about decease detection through odor, which involves not only the study of biological mechanisms that possess a highly developed sense of smell (insects, dogs…) but also biomarkers e electronic noses based on the assumption that certain deceases can be detected using these methods. This project in particular focuses its attention on research being conducted at institutes and companies like the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of Georgia (USA, Dr. Glen Rains), the Los Alamos Stealthy Insect Sensor Project (USA, Dr. Tim Haarmann) and Inscentinel Ltd. (UK).
Insects and bees in particular can be trained using Pavlov’s reflex (bees are fed a water and sugar solution at the same time that they are exposed to the odor they are suppose to detect) and in a few minutes they can smell certain deceases in human breath such like lung cancer, skin cancer, diabetes, tuberculoses, etc.
The prototypes that were produced and shown at MoMA are diagnosis interfaces that allow the use of previously trained bees for decease diagnosis, the bees are much more effective that any other current diagnosis method.
These objects are divided into two areas, one where the bees are placed and another one where people breath into and to where the bees will move if they detect something

O teu projecto BEE’s foi seleccionado em 2007 para integrar a exposição ‘Design and the Elastic Mind’ organizada pela Paola Antonelli no MOMA. O trabalho foi também adicionado à colecção permanente do museu. Podes falar um pouco sobre o projecto e a experiência subsequente?
O trabalho foi iniciado em 2007 durante o mestrado em Design Interactions no Royal College of Art em Londres.
O objectivo do mestrado como um todo era explorar novas perspectivas no design, entra as quais encaixava a fomentação de colaborações entre investigação cientifica e tecnológica e design. Sendo que teria sempre uma ligação á tridimensionalidade do design, ou seja, design de produto. Os objectos e sistemas criados traduziriam essas mesmas áreas de investigação e permitiriam explorar implicações futuras no nosso quotidiano abrindo espaço para o envolvimento do público em geral. Neste contexto surgiu “Bee’s” que é um projecto baseado na recente investigação de detecção de doenças através do odor, esta aborda não só a investigação de diversos sistemas biológicos que possuem uma percepção do cheiro extremamente sofisticada (insectos, cães…) mas também nos chamados biomarcadores e narizes electrónicos, baseados na teoria de que determinadas doenças podem ser detectadas odor. Este projecto em particular chama a atenção para a investigação de vários institutos / empresas como é o caso do College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of Georgia, (USA, Dr. Glen Rains), Los Alamos Stealthy Insect Sensor Project, (USA, Dr. Tim Haarmann) e Inscentinel Ltd, UK. Neste caso os insectos ou as abelhas em particular possuem um sentido olfactivo extraordinário e podem ser treinadas através do reflexo de Pavlov (uma solução de água açucarada é-lhes dada ao mesmo tempo que são expostas ao odor que terão de detectar) em alguns minutos a detectar determinadas doenças no hálito humano, tais como cancro do pulmão, cancro da pele, diabetes, tuberculose, etc. Os protótipos produzidos e expostos no MoMA são ferramentas de diagnóstico que permitem utilizar abelhas previamente treinadas para diagnosticar determinadas doenças no hálito humano, estas são muito mais eficientes do que qualquer diagnostico corrente. Estes objectos possuem dois espaços distintos, um espaço onde as abelhas treinadas são colocadas e outro para onde a pessoa expira e para onde os insectos se descolarão somente se detectarem algo.

6 Which word or phrase would you use to describe that moment when the project leaves the paper or computer screen and enters the three dimensional world?
Surprising…

Que palavra ou expressão utilizarias para descrever o momento em que pela primeira vez o projecto ou ideia salta do papel ou do ecrã para o espaço físico?
Surpreendente…

7 If you had to pick out a book that had an influence on your work and your standing towards the design process, which would you pick?
The books, authors and publications I usually read are more related to other areas than design. News Scientist, the writings of William Boroughs, Italo Calvino, Laurie Anderson, Unit 20 by Marcos Cruz and Salvador Pereza, among many others.

Se tivesses que destacar um livro ou publicação que tenha influenciado o teu trabalho ou moldado o teu posicionamento face ao acto de projecto,qual destacarias? Os livros, autores e publicações que leio em termos profissionais estão provavelmente mais relacionados com outras áreas que o design, por exemplo a News Scientist, William Boroughs, Ítalo Calvino, Laurie Anderson, Unit 20 de Marcos Cruz e Salvador Perez, entre muitos outros.

8 Do you feel any trouble determining when a project is finally done or over with?
For me a project is never over and I’m ok with that. They way I see design work is pretty much something like a platform that is created to promote and generate discussion around a certain concept or idea which develops through that.

Tens dificuldade em dar um projecto por terminado? Um projecto nunca está terminado, e na minha opinião ainda bem. A forma como encaro o trabalho do designer é que o mesmo cria uma plataforma que promove e dinamiza a discussão sobre um conceito ou ideia que se desenvolve a partir daí.

9 How do you usually calm down when you feel stressed or frustrated?
Chamomile tea… and brownies. Hanging out with friends usually helps.

Como é que te costumas acalmar quando te sentes frustrada ou stressada?
Chá de camomila… e brownies. Sair e estar com amigos também costuma ajudar.

10 Which was your hero when you were a kid?
I was never interested in Marvel heroes I preferred the movies of Indiana Jones (although the last one was a disappointment) or the BBC wildlife shows with Sir David Attenborough.

Qual era o teu herói quando eras criança?
Nunca me interessei muito pelos heróis da Marvel, preferia os filmes do Indiana Jones (embora o último filme seja uma desilusão) e deliciava-me com os programas da BBC de Sir David Attenborough sobre a vida selvagem.

11 What’s your biggest goal or ambition?
At the moment I want to find some balance between my work as a teacher and a designer and be able to coordinate the three areas of my interest: design, research and teaching.

Qual é a tua maior ambição ou objectivo para o futuro?
De momento criar um equilíbrio entre o meu trabalho como professora e designer, coordenar as 3 vertentes profissionais que estou interessada em desenvolver: design, investigação e ensino.

12 Have you ever googled yourself?
Since the MoMA show I occasionally research my work mainly to know where, how and who’s talking about or interested in what I do but I must confess I sometimes lack the time for it.

Alguma vez procuraste o teu nome no Google?

Desde a exposição no MoMA que faço pesquisas sobre o meu trabalho, não propriamente sobre o meu nome, sobretudo para saber onde, como e quem fala e está interessado sobre o que faço. Mas devo confessar que tenho muito pouco tempo para isso.

Lately we’ve been quite busy so our posting has been mostly based on videos on technology and interface development which in one way or another we encounter researching for our current projects.
