David Hood’s "Green Wallplug"

Posted by teamdustrial On October - 31 - 2007

David Hood’s “Green Wallplug” takes inspiration from the underground activities of guerrilla gardening, and is designed as a new tool in the effort to green our needlessly dull urban spaces. The wallplug is a composite of compressed dried soil and corn starch, both of which provide food for the seed(s) inside the plug. The seed germinates once the plug planted in a wall and watered in. The production technique used for the wallplugs is press moulding, with a two-part mould and a three-part ram. They are then dried for five to seven days for easy removal from the mould.

.: i will build some of these ;)

Making It: Manufacturing Techniques for Product Design

Posted by teamdustrial On October - 30 - 2007

This one is for designers like me who want to know how things are made. Written by a designer, Making It is different from other books on manufacturing techniques in that it uses contemporary design to illustrate how things are made. I’ve always wanted to know how Demakersvan makes their sculpted birch ply Cinderella table (answer: CNC, I thought it was molded). The book describes more than 90 production techniques, “both established and cutting-edge, so that the mysteries are revealed in an accessible way.”. And, remarkably, in addition to the detailed process info, there’s also information about costs and production volumes.

“One of the biggest highlights from the 2007 Solar Decathlon comes from reigning victor University of Colorado- and the design is proving once again that the team has what it takes to be solar design champions. Committed to defending their 2002 and 2005 titles, the 2007 CU Solar Decathlon team has brought a versatile, modular design that integrates “shining” examples of solar technology, recycled shipping containers, and a super cool aesthetic.”

“It was our philosophy right from the beginning not to be constrained by all those horrible things like commerce and development of products. But we have learnt over the years it doesn’t work. If you are not involved with every stage yourself, things don’t go the way you want them to.

so now we do everything ourselves. The labelling, the barcode, the packaging, the manufacturing. Some of the products are produced in China, some others are produced now in Romania and Portugal.”

PS: I really don’t know how to feel about this.

“Myto” chair introduces nano-furniture era

Posted by teamdustrial On October - 24 - 2007

“This innovative piece of design furniture is a cantilever chair made entirely of BASF’s novel, especially easy-flowing engineering plastic Ultradur® High Speed. Chemically speaking, this material belongs to the family of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and its special processing properties come from nanoparticles. The high flowability, coupled with the strength of this plastic, allows an elegant transition from thick to thin cross sections. Even though the chair is manufactured as a monobloc and has a sturdy frame, its net-like perforations integrated into the backrest and the seat give it a graceful appearance.”

easy to open reoriented film packages, been seeing them finaly used all over, it just makes sense doesn’t it? & about making sense…

“i’m gonna tell you why i like chinese people. they are hanging in there with the sticks! you know they’ve seen the fork but they’re staying with the sticks. i don’t know how could they miss it, chinese farmer wakes up works in the field with a shovel all day, shovel, spoon hello! you’re not planting 20 acres with a couple of pool cues!” Jerry Seinfeld

there’s more insight to that joke than in all literature on design…
